Last week I went to the ACHE (American College of Healthcare Executives) Conference on Healthcare Management in Chicago. I attended seminars on Creating Powerful Teams, Improving Critical Thinking, Healthcare Leadership Secrets, Operations Improvement and Innovation, and International Health Services Delivery.
The Surgeon General, Richard Carmona, spoke at the opening session. He is an inspiring man, truly living the American dream. He was from a poor Puerto Rican family and grew up in Harlem. He dropped out of high school and enlisted in the Army before he was 18. After leaving active duty, he attended community college and then went to medical school at UCSF. He worked in various positions in the medical field including paramedic, registered nurse, physician, and professor of surgery. He also served as a medical director and deputy sheriff of an Arizona police dept. He held positions as chief medical officer, hospital CEO, public health officer, and CEO of a healthcare system. Currently, as Surgeon General, he is committed to prevention as an effective means to improve public health. It was awesome hearing him speak.
An amazing artist, Erik Wahl, spoke during a luncheon on “The Art of Vision.” He gave a dynamic multi-media presentation which challenged executives to expand their perspective to achieve greater levels of performance. For example, he painted an interesting picture, then turned it 180 degrees, and it was a portrait of Albert Einstein! He demonstrated the importance of breaking apart traditional thinking and redefining commonly held assumptions and misconceptions about creativity and success. It was very cool.
Finally, the session on Creating Powerful Teams explained that the more you understand about your own temperament and the temperament of those around you, the more effective you will be in a team. According to the speaker, each person has the tendencies of one of four temperaments (Artisan, Guardian, Rational, Idealist).
